Living Fearlessly

The word fear appears many times throughout the bible from Genesis to Revelation. Have you ever wondered why fear is mentioned so many times in the bible?  Well, it is because God understands that fear is not only our biggest enemy, but it is also our constant companion, and God wants to help us overcome it.  If we think of our comfort zone, as a largely self-created prison which consists of a collection of cant’s, must’s, must not’s and other informed beliefs which are formed from all of the negative thoughts and decisions we have accumulated, and continue to reinforce during our life time.  Every fear is like a bar in that prison, but the good news is, because fears are feelings, the faulty ones can be removed by faith in God, and we can become free from them. Praise God.  Does this however mean that we can live totally free from fear? No, of course it doesn’t because living fearlessly is not the same as never being afraid.

Sometimes it is good to be afraid because fear is a great teacher. What is not good and is always counter-productive is living in fear and allowing it to dictate our choices. If we allow fear to dominate and dictate our lives we are effectively allowing fear to define who we are. To live fearlessly, means to stand up to fear, to take its measure, refusing to let it shape and define our life, just like Caleb, who showed no fear in taking possession of God’s land; Numbers 13:30 ‘Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it’

Living fearlessly means taking risks and not playing it safe. It means refusing to take no for an answer especially when you are sure that the answer should be yes.  Saying no to fear, means that we are refusing to settle for less than we deserve, taking what is ours by right and let’s add – what God has promised and planned for us.  The truth is that fear can steal our dreams, but only if we allow it to.  If the Israelites had lived in fear then this would have compromised the task of reclaiming the Promised Land from what appeared to be an undefeatable opposition (The Anakites were a formidable race of giant, warlike people Deuteronomy 2:10). Joshua 14:9-12; ‘So on that day Moses swore to me, the land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.  Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.’

Are we being obedient to God’s word or are we allowing fear to compromise God’s plan and purpose for our lives? Matthew: 25:24-25 ‘Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. Master, he said, I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you. His master replied, You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest’.

Those who know Jesus Christ need not fear. If we are allowing fear into our lives then there is an answer;

Psalm: 34:4 ‘I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears’. Praise God.

Romans 8:15 ‘The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father’. Amen.

Revelation 1:17 ‘When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last’. Amen.

We need to trust God and take risks in faith and ask God what is His will and plan for our lives. We can be sure of this; Matthew 28:20 ‘For I am with you always even to the end of the age’. Today God wants to break the fear that may have been holding you back for years. He wants you to be free and to not walk in fear anymore. He wants you to trust Him in His words, His love and grace. The solution to overcoming your fears is freely available today. Read God’s words, practice being in His presence, pray to Him and get to know God better.

Jesus lives in those who know Him and the words to the well-known song below really emphasise how we can deal with fear in our lives. Praise God.

                       ‘Because He lives I can face tomorrow
                        Because He lives all FEAR is gone
                        And now I know I know
                        He holds the future
                        And life is worth the living
                        Just because He lives’
